First Look - Fall 2018

'Wayne' answered our Kijiji ad looking for a small displacement hull.   He  had "inherited" this boat.  The original owner had passed away after working on it for about 27 years.

Out With the Old

For a narrow, round-bilge hull, we found the cabin too high and too heavy.  We decided to reconfigure the whole cabin and deck structure.  We removed most of the old cabin structure.

Inboard Out

We removed and sold the old inboard engine, transmission, shaft and Prop. Our plan is to use a four-stroke outboard in a well.

Hauling to Iroquois, Ont.

First guy we hired didn't know what he was doing. "Toy Storage" did a fine job with the move.

Winter 2018-19

Delivered to Iroquois and wrapped for winter.

Turning over

It took us about a week to turn the boat over.  Bottom work required this.

March 2020 - Pre-Covid

Before the boatyard was closed by the Covid 19 lockdown, we managed to start the deck framing using laminated beams that we had made over the winter of 2018-2019.

May 2020

When the boatyard opened again, we made arrangements to be placed inside a covered shelter for the summer.  For the move, we built a cradle under the hull.

100_6000.JPG

We were happy to be under the shelter where we could work all summer, rain or shine, without having to wrap and unwrap tarps.

In the shelter, work progressed quickly on the deck and cabin framing.  MikeBro and Noreen came twice over the summer.  Both times they spent a week and their help was much appreciated.

100_6406.JPG

We finished the framing and attached cabin walls.  We made the 'beamless' cabin top with balsa-core sandwiched between layers of thin plywood, all bonded with epoxy.

Summer 2020

100_6478.JPG

By mid-summer, we had finished laying the decking and building the main cabin structure, cabin top and pilothouse walls.

100_5911.JPG

Next, we covered all the exterior plywood with fiberglass embedded in epoxy and covered with a layer of epoxy fairing putty.

Our final challenge of the fall was to create, install, fiberglass and putty the pilothouse roof.

100_6670.JPG

Just before Thanksgiving Day, we emptied the boat of tools and equipment and covered it with a tarp.  It doesn't need to be covered because of the weather, it's to protect the (as yet unpainted) epoxy from the sun's UV rays.

October 2020

100_6823.JPG

Our major task was to create window frame cover plates for all nine windows.

Additionally, we acquired more materials; steering system, VHF radio, plumbing and electrical components, instruments, safety gear, etc.

Fall '21 - It Runs!

Ran the boat to begin engine break-in schedule and test handling.  Began work on the interior (fresh water tank, settee/bunk and WC walls), winterized the motor.

Summer '21 - It Floats!

100_8436.JPG

Had settee cushions made.  Purchased settee hardware, teak trim and teak dish holder.  Made two dorade boxes.  Purchased solar panel kit.  Began work on forward battery box.

Spring '22

Installed bow thruster, dorade vents, solar panel, forward battery box, toilet, galley cabinet, head cabinet, fridge and navigator seat.  sailed home to BYC (2 days).  Painted interior, began building seatbacks for settees.

Summer 2022  Interior Work Continues

Summer 2022 (continued)   Meanwhile, We Enjoy the Boat

Fall 2022

Hauled out early due to unusually low water and in preparation for changing all the floating docks in the harbour.

Steel Cradle

Concerned about high winds blowing 'Helen Back' off the stands, we acquired a steel cradle and managed to maneuver it into place under the boat.

Winter 2022

We wrapped the boat with an extra tarp at the stern to protect the big tarp from being thrashed by the strong south-west winds at the waterfront.

Dinghy

We built a 'stitch-and-glue' dinghy over the winter (2022), in the hope that it will be useful as we 'anchor out' while cruising this summer of '23.
