Building an Outboard Trawler - June 5 -

Writer's picture: Gord and DonnaGord and Donna

Despite the heat and humidity, we managed to get a few things done at the boat today.

Donna continued cleaning the paint drips from the mahogany trim. She had to take frequent breaks because she found it hard to work above her head. Tilting her head up for long periods was the problem. On her breaks, she found it comfortable to do some knitting with her head tilted down. Between knitting sessions, she was able to complete the paint cleaning job.

I wanted to install the electrical panel today so I got right to work on that. I drilled access holes for the wires, disassembled the panel, cut pocket screw holes on the inside and reassembled it. Then Donna and I worked together to get it attached to the wall (dry fit).

The next thing I wanted to do was to install the automatic bilge pump. I cut a thin piece of fiberglass sheet to use as a base for the pump and the float switch. Having both items bolted to the fiberglass means they act as one unit and this will ensure that they stay in place without having to screw them to the hull structure. I fit the discharge hose to the pump but nothing is wired yet.

What a shiny clean bilge!

Finally, I wanted to begin work on the steering and motor controls. Unfortunately, the hole in the side of the motorwell, where the steering cable passes through, doesn't exactly line up with the fitting on the motor. Also, we want to raise the motor about three inches so that needs to happen before we re-drill the side panel and finalize the installation of the steering cable.

We were able to attach the steering wheel although the cable is still unattached. We were also able to attach the motor control lever.

We're still missing the throttle and shifter cables on the lever control but we began by running the electrical wires through the first bulkhead.

It's starting to look like a helm station!
