Building an Outboard Trawler - Oct 22, 2022 -

Writer's picture: Gord and DonnaGord and Donna

Winter Preparations Continue:

I made this thin cover for the motorwell out of cheap 'doorskin' plywood. In an effort to make it last, Donna painted it with Tremclad.

There is a short length of 2X3 screwed to the underside of each end to encourage it to take the curve of the deck and to keep it from sliding off. The other day, the wind blew it off anyway.

We removed the 2X3s and re-installed them with glue. Then I drilled a hole in each 2X3.

We threaded string through the holes and down inside the motorwell to two of the boat stands. Now it won't blow off.

Using some vinyl material that Mom gave us, Donna made a cover for the solar panel.

She sewed in a draw-string.

She also added eyelets for 2 lengths of string that pass under the panel ends.

Donna has been busy.

Here she's taping plastic over the ventilation holes under the cockpit seats. This is to keep rain out (for now) and to keep little critters out (when the tarp is on).

A Steel Cradle for Helen Back:

So, here's the thing. Two people have now told us stories of yachts blowing over in the fierce winds that whistle down the river from the southwest. They talk about boats that were out on the peninsula. . . . the windiest spot in Brockville. . . . where ours is. . . . I swear, when it's blowing 2 or 3 at the house, it's about 20 out there.

We heard that there was a folding steel cradle available at the club. It's just the thing to hold our baby securely. We bought it. It will need to be modified with some steel work and welding but our buddy Dean is a welder and a member at the club (and a fellow trawler owner). We traded a couple of surplus boat stands for his help with the modifications.

A couple of days ago, I sprayed all the nuts and bolts with WD40 and today Donna and I brought down a ratchet set and some wrenches and we removed the uprights.

This should be interesting. First to get the modifications done and then to wrestle it under our 5200-lb baby. Wish us luck!

Music:

I'm taking a most interesting course at the 50+ Activity Centre. It's a beginner course in blues harmonica. The first three classes have been great.

More Music:

We had a great time at Open Mic on Thursday. Dave and Neil joined us again and our set was very well received. We played:

  • More Often Than Not (David Wiffen)

  • I Put a Spell on You (Screamin' Jay Hawkins)

  • Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)

The fun was tempered with sadness due to the fact that one of the performers, (and neighbour of ours) Tim, lost his mother the previous week. She was a regular attendee when we started going there five or six years ago. Tim sang her favourite song. Bob also sang a song in her memory and we all raised a glass. Poor Donna had watery eyes two or three times.

Believe it or not, we're working on 'The Sultans of Swing' for our next Open Mic.

Yeah, I know eh? Big Song. Wish us luck again!

Thanks for reading our blog!
