Have a safe Halloween!
MichaelSon is back from his trip to Spain and came to visit yesterday, bringing souvenirs and gifts. So nice to spend time with him.
The boat is put away and we had a dusting of snow this morning.
On to other things.
My doctor wants me to bicycle in order to keep strength up in my knees. She told me this last year.
I hate bicycles and I think it could be that a bicycle was the origin of the phrase 'pain in the butt'. I'd rather walk. I loved cycling back when I was a kid, but that was a long, long time ago. I gave it up when I got my first motorcycle at 18.
But my knees are getting weaker so I started looking around and found one on Kijiji.
It's a pieced-together model that I got from a guy who used to own the 'small engine' repair shop downtown (Donna had him tune up the lawn mower this spring after Honda failed to even look at it).
This is a dead-simple, bare-bones bike. It has a tall steel frame (Peugeot) and it's relatively light at 26lbs. The rear wheel hub with it's multi-gear assembly has been switched out for a single-speed 'coaster brake' rear axle. No fenders, basket, luggage rack, hand brakes, chain guard or mirrors. It has a kickstand and that's it.
So how do I keep from getting all slushy and muddy all winter?
MikeBro gave me a rig onto which I can mount the bike and pedal indoors. It has variable tension. Thanks Mike!
Wish me luck!
Speaking of knees, we want to wish 'Speedy Recovery' to MartyBro who is recuperating from knee replacement surgery a couple of days ago.
Hang in there Marty and be careful with the use of those fancy drugs.
Idle Thoughts:
Can this be right?
An average car's fuel consumption is 8L/100km.
The most common jet liner, a Boeing 737-800, burns 850 US gallons (3200liters) per hour.
On a 5-hour flight, that's 16,000 liters. (At about 850 km/hr, the plane would travel 4,250km in 5 hours)
16,000 liters divided by 189 (max) passengers, gives us 85 liters per passenger.
Using the same fuel/passenger rate, the allotment for an average car with 4 passengers (at 85 liters per passenger) would be 340 liters.
Burning 340 liters at 8L/100km, that car would travel 4,250km. Exactly the same distance as the plane.
Thanks for reading the blog!
Keep warm!
