Outboard Trawler Update:

October 15th 2023:

Sad News:

Donna learned (via Facebook) that our old friend, work colleague and rental property business partner, Gerard Houle, passed away last week. Our thoughts are with his daughter, family and friends.

Good News:

I've calculated our boat's range with a full tank (68 liters or 15 Imperial Gallons).

It works out to 325 Kilometers. Awesome!

Haul-out:

I think it rained for three days last week. When it stopped, Donna and I did more preparations for haul-out. We had emptied the fresh water tanks and pumped out the holding tank before the rains came but we still had pack up and remove all the galley stuff (including food, pots and pans, dinnerware and stuff), the toiletries in the head, the bedding, spare parts, tools, charts and paperwork, etc.

This past Friday, I prepared the cradle and boat stands.

Yesterday (Saturday) was haul-out day. There was a scheduling snafu with the crane and we had to compress a two-day job into one long day. We started at 7am and we only took a half-hour lunch break.

I worked on moving boats while Donna helped out in the kitchen. She got a few photos from the upstairs dining patio. . .

I'm always a bit nervous when she takes flight.

She's on the hard for winter after serving us well and taking us far this boating season.

I suppose she deserves a rest.

It was a ten-hour work day, the last boat being hauled at 5pm. That's a tiring day for us old guys. Luckily, the weather was good, overcast and cool with light winds.

This morning, after a good night's sleep, Donna and I went back and scrubbed her bottom. We also washed the topsides and the motor. She's looking fine!

Parting Shot:

Chris e-mailed a few more photos of the boat as we were leaving Smith Island at the beginning of our long trip.

I like this one.

How lucky we are.

Music:

On Thursday (Oct 5) we were back at Open Mic. It was a great evening. Dave, Neil and Tom joined us. Although our first set was a bit rough (Donna and I hadn't prioritized practice time) our second set went well and, as always, it was a pleasure to listen to the other performers.

We played:

  • The Fields of Athenry

  • Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out

  • San Francisco Bay Blues

  • Wish You Were here (the Pink Floyd song)

  • Knockin' on Heaven's Door

  • Tupelo Honey

Thanks for reading our blog!
